Lanai has not changed much over hundreds of years due to the low population and lack of large development on the island. The island has maintained its natural appeal and Native Hawaiian heritage through caring for the land. The local people of the island has taken this dedication to preserving both the historical and natural sites of the island by teaching visitors how to have respect for the land. Lanai is home to Kanepuu Preserve that has an estimated 48 endemic Native Hawaiian plants that have survived time from care taken over the years. It is now maintained and guarded by the Nature Conservancy to teach visitors of the island plants and the importance of maintaining it for future generations.
